To go way off thread, one cannot be surprised at 'voter apathy', when what one votes for in Whitehall is overridden by a bunch of unelected hooray-henrys in Brussels.

They also changed the chemical in Jayes a few years ago as the original was damaging to fish if it got in the water course. The old stuff was great you could do loads of stuff with it most wernt mentioned on the tin.

Most of the stuff that has disipared off the shelfs is because the companys don't want to spend the fee to the EU.

Just make sure you dilute it properly, full instructions on the pack, different strengths for different purposes.

If you use ***** to sterilise the soil, does it not kill any good organisms in the soil?
Sorry to sound stupid (I look it too!) but how do you use it on the soil - do you just dilute and water the soil with a watering can?

This thread is so apt! i was searching high and low yesterday for a tin of ***** Fluid - i even asked in a DIY shop and the young(ish) chap behind the counter HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT i mean SURELY everyone knows what ***** Fluid is ......don't they???

ANyway - i managed to get the last tin off the shelf in Focus and spent seveal hours this morning (all togged up in protective face shield, mask, hat and rubber gloves) cleaning the greenhouse with said liquid - hurrah! my greenhouse is all sparkly now and at last i can put all my plants back in it that are currently 'staying over' in next doors one.

Why didnt you just you a sulpher bomb. Take all the plants out then put it in light it and close the door.

I read an article in a wildlife magazine sometime ago that it was ok to use a weak solution of ***** fluid to clean the bird table, so long as you washed it down well afterwards with clean water it would be ok. I have used it now for about 18 months and had no problems.


(I reckon it should be used full strenght on those parasites over in Brussells that keep wasting our money. )

You can get it off the shelf in Morrisons Supermarket during the summer on the gardening section!

It wouldn't sterilise the soil in the greenhouse.

The reason most people usually change the bedsoil isn't because of the pests or diseases present but because of the build up of salts (usually seen as a crust on the surface)
Growing the same stuff in the same location year after year on amy area is bad news in my book, even with soil sterilisation which would kill useful bacteria and fungus as well!
Anyway, as far as I know there are no legal chemicals available to the amateur for this purpose.
Steam or heat sterilisation could be used if you wanted to use soil for potting compost ie John Innes types.

Thats an interesting point Skipper - there was something from the RSPB saying that due to the weather over the summer there is some kind of disease that goldfinches etc are now getting because of the bugs growing on bird tables. I cleaned mine the other weekend and will keep my eye on it. DDL

That is, the company which makes ***** is very happy to make millions out of us, but when asked to stump up a tiny proportion of that profit and prove that their product is safe for the uses to which it is put, decide suddenly to opt out and change both the product and the uses which it recommends. I am a cynic, born and bred. The EU may have done ***** a huge marketing favour by allowing them the opt out.

Now, how do I reconcile the following with what I wrote above?

Soak some soft twine in said fluid and pull a loop of said twine over radishes or anything else bothered by flea beetle, you may like the results

Same fluid (Couple of spoonfuls per gallon of water) drenching an onion bed with white rot fungus followed by a liberal use of paraffin torch , digging and repeating a few times may make bed safe for use in a year)

Trouble is we are a small part of those profits and most of the sales are in placwes like USA and non EEC where they don't have to stump up 10's of £K a year. Especially when you can go to most supermarkets over the channel and buy stuff off the shelf that has been banned in this country for years! Again it's a case of us sticking to these stupid rules instead of telling them to shove them up their Arc's (de Triumphe ).
