  • It is finished!! The Polytunnel!

The epic job of putting together our polytunnel is done!!!

It has taken us several weeks, due to weather, the fact we have full time jobs, missing parts etc, but we finished it yesterday! We covered it despite there being winds between 12-20 mph (which is a strict no-no in any polytunnel book!), as we'd seen the forecasts for the next few weeks and that seemed the least wind we could hope for!

It's 10ft wide by 30ft long, and has timber base rails instead of being trenched.

If you can spot by the double doors, a huge puddle of water.... just as we were finishing the last end, we had 30 minutes of torrential rain, which drenched us and the dogs, and we spent 30 minutes in the tunnel making a makeshift poncho and hat for me out of cut-offs of polythene. There will be no pictures of this.

I haven't put anything in it yet, as we've got irrigation systems and groundcover to put in, although I'll be moving stuff in this week. We visited B&Q yesterday and got loads of growbags - we're not planting directly into the ground, as it's infested with couch grass and bindweed. The plan is eventually to have raised beds, but I think I've given Mr OWG enough projects for the time being!

Woo! Can't believe we've actually got it done...

Well done - that looks like a grand job! And it will hold SO much more than my 6 x 10 greenhouse - I'm so jealous! (Sorry, envious - which sounds least worst?)

I concur with Flummery. It looks great and you will be able to grow loads in it and I am very envious!

I would have preferred a poly tunnel - but the oh would have buried me in the remaining slither of lawn.
Excuse me, could we have an eel? You've got eels down your leg.

            Not interested, it looks rubbish.

Ok, I'm lying, it looks AMAZING and I'm very envious too.

Thanks guys.... we've been saving up for AGES for it, so am pretty pleased we've finally got it sorted!

It was blummin' hard work though... instructions say it can be done in a weekend with 2 people. I shall refute that whole-heartedly. Even if we'd had a weekend of exceptional weather, we wouldn't have got it done!!

Spoilsport I think it would be a great help for all of us newbies, really, honest. It's your duty to show us

Loving the polytunnel - looks the business. And if it's survived the winds over the last few days, you know it's not going any where soon

Am now REALLY looking forward to getting ours in the autumn. Will probably be the same width but only 2/3 of the length but have a lot of digging and clearing to do before then (and there's potatoes in the way anyway!).

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

That looks great, a really tight fit. One of the ends on mine is a bit flappy, it was the first end we did and it valways niggles me when it's windy.

Great timing you'll still be able to make great use of it. To give you an idea of how well it could be. This morning I counted 18 set tomato's, 49 strawberries and 9 flower buds on my four squash plants (another 12 outside which have only just left the PT at the weekend)). Picked 13 beetroots, two large handfuls of dwarf french beans, dug up the last of the carrotts and picked one round courgette. Have 31 peeper plants 16 have fowers and noticed 3 had little peppers. This is my best season and I'm still learning but get really, really excited when I go in there each morning. Edited to add - a 12ft row of peas with pea shoots now forming

I hope you really enjoy yours

Oh god, don't talk to me about the ends! The pleating was the fiddliest thing ever, and Mr OWG had 2 attempts at one end of it... we're very close to the coast, so we have almost constant wind, meaning that we really had to get it very tight!

Mr OWG is suffering from 'Polytunnel Fatigue' now and vows that he will never put another one up (until we save up for a second!! )
