Put the greenhouse staging up this morning - wo ho ho - its looking good. Took me ages - very fiddly and backbreaking work, not helped by next to useless instructions - but I'm very pleased. I went for double tiered green aluminium staging in the end, trays on top and slats underneath. Loads of space for my stuff now. I just can't wait to get sowing. Just wish it would stop stop stop raining and blowing a gale for more than an hour or two at a time.

Hi Jools, like you Ive just ordered a 10x8 alu greenhouse from Rhino. I would have loved green but for the price I decided I could have all the staging and potting station ect so I comprimised. Ive ordered double tier staging,4ft with alu shelf on top with cappillary matting and wooden slats below, Ive also ordered 6ft of integril shelving. sounds like Im being extravigant but it is a retirement pressy from me to me! got to work out which is the best base yet, can anyone advise?

        Hi Pauline,
There have been recent discussions on the Vine about greenhouse bases. I picked up (not literally) some heavy 2 x 2 ft paving slabs for 25 and these were laid on a bed of rubble covered with builders sand. A slim gap was left in between the slabs so that water can escape. I am really pleased with it as I find it much cleaner than my old greenhouse which was erected on the soil with a few slabs up the middle. You might prefer to have a border though.
Let us know how you get on.....and happy retirement!!!

Hi Guys an' Gals, this is my 1st posting so please go easy on me...

When I get home this w/e I have a plethora of jobs to do (like recomissioning a 210hp V8 engine and collecting a Police riot van). One of these delightful tasks is to start digging trenches (not unlike the Somme given the state of our garden) for a greenhouse that I was 'requested' to buy.

Now, I would like nice neat slabs as a base (being a Virgo but should have been a Libra), but meine frau Shirlthegirl (who is a right Aquarian) wants soil to grow things in. I think slabs down the sides would be a good base for staging as well as they might sink into the soil base. A democratic decision was made and the slabs stay put under the shed. For the record, I would never argue with a woman that can wield a pick axe Jools... And I know for a fact Shirls can... So I had better build this greenhouse or I will end up in the doghouse. And he is a dakky rat so not much space in there then.

The point is, as we all know we live in the northern hemisphere, so Sol enlightens our existence from the south. I therefore proposed to OH (wasn't once enough?) that we (moreso I) dig the longest footing trenches in a north/south direction, thus the sun will move over from one side of the greenhouse to the other. OH would like said greenhouse to be next to a hedge behind the 12x10 shed in an east/west direction, as I understand her orders. Sorry if I am wrong Shirls...

So should I dig north/south or east/west? Or a hole to jump into if I am wrong?

I know this might only have a little to do with greenhouse staging, but as I have only a vague idea what greenhouse staging is (from the posts I have read, a form of shelving inside?) it might be a good start for me anyway. I know what cylinder head staging is though if that helps at all.
          Let's go diggin' dirt....

So it seems I had better get my shovel then... I found a previous posting regarding g/h positioning. Concensus = north/south. Paving slabs down the middle. Therefore a compromise!
