  • Greenhouse heating over winter

Hello everyone! Tonight is the first night we've had a "proper" frost here in Preston - my OH very kindly built in my "greenhouse within a greenhouse" for me this PM - have put my plants inside that, and am trying out my greenhouse parafin heater for the first time - am I being soft? the weather forecast said -3C tonight, and -4C tomorrow.
What is everyone else using? DDL

Depends what you have in your greenhouse DDL. For things which just need to be frost free fleece on its own would probably do. If your using a parafin heater you do need to leave a window open as they produce a tremendous amount of moisture. Do let us know how you get on.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Can't afford to heat the greenhouse all winter, so anything really tender comes indoors. Lots of plants can survive cold weather if they're kept dry (fuchsias, geraniums) the problems really start when the roots are wet and cold.

Fleece or bubble wrap is good insulation, also if you have any spare polystyrene packaging - the sort that comes when electrical goods are delivered to stop them rattling aroung - that's good to stand pots on, and you can then cover the whole lot with fleece

Many thanks. The heater kept the greenhouse at 1C last night, so Im pleased, but like you say it would be expensive to do this all winter. I may use it again tonight, but will give the fleece a try as well. DDL
