  • Chard or silverbeet in the greenhouse

Has anyone else ever tried Swiss Chard or Silverbeet in a greenhouse? I always though of it as a cool weather plant, however, mine are thriving right next to the tomatoes and egg plant, or aubergines. So much so that I have started a new batch to replace these when I harvest them. I am also going to try beets for just the greens.

As my greenhouse is busting at the seams with aubergines, peppers, tomatoes and a cucumber I'd resent giving the chard house room. Mine's on the plot and in the garden. I suspect it will be more likely to bolt in the heat.

Mine has the usual complement of tomatoes, peppers and aubergines also. I have two small corners that were unused, so I stuck the chard there as a trial. It is growing like mad. Planted April 7th. and I will harvest it this week. I never had luck with chard in soil, and gave up on it. The bugs devour it. I have fifteen plants in a 3 square foot hydroponic system, and the results speak for themselves. I guess you never know, unless you try.

I had 50 Chard and 50 Perpetual Spinach in the tunnel last year - they grew at twice the speed of the outdoor crops and both were cropped heavily at least once a month - no problems with bolting at all. Am doing the same this year.

I will harvest very soon, and there is no sign of bolting. It is growing so fast I can see the difference each day. The greenhouse is warm enough for the peppers to be longer than eight inches, but the heat is also moving the chard along.

Wish I had a bigger greenhouse then!
