Greenhouse - 6x10 where to buy

Hi All

The boyfriend and I are buying our first house (just waiting for the exchange to take place at the moment)... He has got his double garage there and I would like a greenhouse. We measured the area for it to go in which is between the garage and fence and already concreted as it has a wendy house on it. Its 8ft wide by 13ft to the garage door so have decided that a 6ft by 10ft is probably the best idea...

My question is where did people get theres from? I have seen the halls popular for £411 on screwfix and £370 (including the delivery) from the Greenhouse People. Screwfix says it has a 15 year guarentee where as the Greenhouse People only say 10, and I have contacted them about this as Halls offer a 15 year as far as I can see...

Any advice for a newbie greenhouse investigator really is appreicated Oh the excitment!

I just picked up my first greenhouse from freecycle so it might be worth trying on there but I don't think 6x10 is a particularly common size.

Not sure about any other tips but the greenhouse people do seem to have a 6x10 for £299 in their clearance section:

My 6 x 10 from the greenhouse people went up with no trouble at all and still has other plot owners drooling over it after being up and running for about 6 weeks.

It was £299 but I added the safety glass, autovents and louver and a few other bits andbobs and the lot was just under £500.

If you're planning kids, have pets or may get local sh1t5 throwing stones then the safety glass is probably worth it. THe autovents and louver are well worth it if you're not around during the day. Mine are keeping my babies at just the right temp and stopping them cooking

I have this one and it is great. My only regret is that I did not go for safety glass.

If you do get it from GHP:

CHECK the glass they deliver as they did not send all the right stuff and I had to get some cut. They told me after that if I sent a receipt they would reimburse me - but I had the glass cut at a small glaziers before I knew this and did not get a receipt.

Also get some spare W clips from Wilkos as my pack was a little light on them.

I'd concur re: the auto vents and louvre as I got them too and they are fab. However, I did find out that for this particular model of greenhouse you can get an auto vent that is purpose built:

More expensive, but I'd have preferred the correct one for the greenhouse (the ones I have do work ok - just a generic AV but I am a bit retentive!).

Thank you all Not getting it quite yet so can keep an eye out for offers. One thing I wanted to ask is if I get the horticultural glass to begin with (depend on finances) can I later buy a pack of toughened glass to replace them? Would I be able to buy packs or would I have to contact a glass cutter for that do you think?

If young kids could run (or ride) into the greenhouse glass, like mine could many years ago, I'd suggest putting containers (full of veg!!!) around the outside of the greenhouse and then put a secure 2 foot high fence around them.

My lads never even broke one window with all their games of football and rugby.... but I've broken more than one thru' clumsiness !!!


And although glass has got more costly recently it is still quite cheap to buy. Go to any glass shop and ask for your size (they will be in metric - usually 600mm wide and 450 or 600mm tall) tell them it is for a greenhouse and they will give you an option of thicknesses and costs. It is worth pricing glass at a few places before buying.

you can get a greenhouse almost anywhere in fact a bloke at work has asked me to get rid of one for him for free just come and get it. you have alot of things to consider. wait till you move in and then see where the the light is. you don't want to loose it winter. are kids on the agenda?. if they are then think about glass. you may want to invest the extra money in laminated glass altogether safer. is the site windy? with hind sight I would not go for the cheapest as in the long run it could cost more. take your time look around and visit sites where they are on display. you say you want a 6 x 8. you will run out of space we all do. look at every option as greenhouses are not cheap and a fairly hefty investment if you find it's not suitable for your needs. I would recomend rhino at greenhouse direct just type in greenhouses direct and you will get there. and yes it is so exciting but please hold back and really do your research before jumping in headlong. easy for me to say but hard for you do I know. whatever you decide good luck.
