  • slug pellets in the greenhouse

I got fed up of finding half eaten strawberries on the strawbs in the greenhouse and did somehting I never do. I sprinkled a few pellets I ofunf in the shed the previous owners had left, round each plant.
I have got 6 large snails the next day. I disposed of them in the bin so the birds etc can't get them.
I didn't like doing it but maybe was worth it..

I am now tempted to put a few round my sons little patch of garden as his sunfloers have now been eaten for the fouth time and I am running out of seedling to replace them. He gets so upset when he finds them with no leaves.

Hi I have slug pellets out, I have found some new pet and child frendly ones from doff called slug attack. A freind uses them and said they are good. I haven't used them yet as i am using up my old stocks.

The snails avoid the slug pellets by climbing up the glass and dropping on to the plants from above. Snails with 'A' levels around ere!

try wrapping the stems in tin foil, about 3- 4 inches should do - works for me
Jiving on down to the beach to see the blue and the gray, seems to be all and it's rosy-it's a beautiful day!

Slug pellets actually attract slugs, you might be drawing them in from your neighbours, not a very satisfactory solution.Copper rings work and so do beer traps and don't poison the countryside.

I usually put down beer traps so the slugs and snails die happy but had to use slug bait in my g.house when I thought my Dorset naga had been totally demolished by a snail (or 2) with a taste for spicy food. I think I got them because the chilli is recovering and the few molluscs I found were ex-snails. Anybody got any theories as to why they should go for the naga but ignore the milder chillies?
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

My mild chilli got 'got' the snail and it ignored the hot one!

I have no slugs or snails in my 8x16 greenhouse. I eliminated them by going out every night with a torch and removing them by hand.

At the beginning there were lots and I went on patrol twice a night. They got fewer and fewer and after about two weeks there were almost none. I have not found any for weeks now and my slug beer traps never get any.

I still patrol almost every night but its much quicker now just a minute or two and there is no slug damage on my plants. I have deep foundations and the frame sits tightly on the foundations so its difficult for them to get in around the sides. That just leaves the door area and I am going to put copper tape accross that.

Even if you don't get them all it will help a lot.

They are safe around kids etc. The slugs eat them then crawl away to die so you don't have to go around picking them up I used them around my dahlias last year and they were great! Been using them this year as well

I tried jogging, but I couldn't keep the ice in my glass.

Maybe it wasn't the pellets that killed them? I must admit Boss lady is fonder of hot food than me but she's tougher (and more difficult to handle) than a snail.

I like to pick them up as I a) count how many I have got and b) know the birds etc can't get the shells.

Newbie question alert! Why don't people want the birds to get them?

After some work on the drainage on our allotments the workmen left 4 of those huge bags of gravel behind, we were told we could dig in and I used my share to cover the greenhouse floor. This has made a huge difference in the slug population.
Before then I was putting large sheets of newspaper under the watering trays so it stuck out all round and I sprinkled the organic slug pellets on that.

Either system has made a huge improvement in my usual problems with slugs with very little nibbling of seedlings.

Am also trying sunflowers for the fourth time and I'm touching wood as I say this but they are surviving, now is this the straw mulch or just luck, don't know but am hoping to get some flowers this year. Please slugs let me have some sunflowers....

It's because the snails/slugs have eaten the poison and have it in their system, so if the birds eat them then they can get poisoned as well.
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.
