For shallow containers, for lettuce etc - checkout your local greengrocers. A lot of the stuff that is sold loose is coming in plastic, non returnable trays/containers. The shop often has to pay to dispose of their waste, so are usually only too willing to give them away.

My latest acquisition? A dozen black plastic trays, approx 8" deep with a couple of large holes in the sides. Much better than the blue basket type of trays that some loose mushrooms come in.

Oh how sad that I am becoming pernickety about free stuff!!
