  • Purple Jalapeno's!!

Inspired by smallblueplanets jar of purple pickled Jalapeno's last year I begged a few seeds from her!
Thanks SBP, and as I know you haven't grown them this year yourself................. hopefully I'll be able to return the favour! I'll PM you later in the year.

I expected them to grow green first then change colour.............but no, they have pretty purple flowers and start off and stay purple.
I've probably got enough now from six plants to make a jar of pretty pickles next weekend!

Don't leave them on the plant too long, mine have started going red, thus ruining my plans of pretty purple pickle

So maybe that is what I have too then!! Would you be kind enough to share the "pretty purple jalapeno pickle" recipe please? (as I have several of them now and don't know what to do with them!)

        many thank you's!

SBP's maybe the one to ask? I like a colourful mix so add carrot and shallot in equal quantities. I use Sarsons white pickling vinegar with sugar added to taste. Mine kept well and stayed crunchy until the last jar which I finished a fortnight ago!

I'm growing Razzmatazz, which are a similar colour, but stumpier and grow upright on the plant.
            pretty, but not very hot

I found the purple jals took a long time to change colour, they went a deep red, more attractive than the purple I thought! But they were flavourless...down to the weather &/or growing conditions I'm sure, so I couldn't be bothered with them this year. Like I didn't have enough other varieties to try, hmmm!

Yours look good though Snadger, were they hot?

I grew these for the first time this year - again courtesy of seeds from SBP. I got 2 decent sized plants and they're still fruiting well. Not very hot, but fab stuffed with cream cheese and baked.

Mine (seeds from Irie Jan) developed a hotter flavour once they had ripened, but stil not hot hot. OH liked them as he prefers milder flavours. I preferred the choc habeneros myself

I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

I've grown purple jalapenos this year too. I agree, it's an amazing looking plant. I'm afraid that once I pickled mine most of the purple disappeared. This is probably due to the heat from blanching though. If you pickling cold they should keep their colour. Haven't tasted them yet.
