  • Onions & Shallots

    Just a quick question.

I have grown onions and shallots from seed, planted march in seed trays in the glasshouse. The plan was to plant them out but the raised seed beds are still not in place, needless to say they ended up ignored in the glasshouse.

Clearing out one of the glasshouse today and about to bin the onions and shallots to find that I have what is basically sets.

Would it be possible to store these for planting next year?

    No, they'll just bolt

Use them whole in casseroles or with the roast. Pickle them in vinegar.
I would probably keep a few to plant as 'sets' then when the bolt you can harvest the seeds.

Wella (as Sven would say!)..........as far as I know thats how sets are produced? If you have a spare patch of land try a few next year just out of interest?

I'd get big trays and plant them more spaced out in the glasshouse and harvest during the winter as they get bigger.

Ooooh, I've got some of those too, except mine are in celltrays! Nice to know I'm not the only one who either forgets about things or runs out of room to move them on.

I've got several trays of late sown onions - they are going into the lottie this week after the spuds are out - under a long cloche to try and keep them growing for some of the winter.
