  • Got me PolyTunnel sorted at last...

    Hi all

Well I have battled the wind and rain the past few weeks to fix up my newly inherited polytunnel. One side had some huge rips in. I intended to fix it up but time ran away with me and one weekend I popped down there to find the rips much bigger and some of the poles had collapsed. I cancelled all plans for that weekend and concentrated on fixing the mess. Sadly my attempts where futile as when I went to check my work on Monday, the whole thing had collapsed again!! So I decided to cut my losses, as it where. Instead of trying to rebuild the collapsed side, I basically halved the poly tunnel. I finished yesterday and I am reasonably confident that it will hold, although we have high winds forecast for new years day.

Right, so I have some questions:

The ground inside the tunnel is very hard. I have planned not to dig my plot but I was prepared to dig the poly tunnel as it's something I want to do 'proper'. I would apprecieate any tips on the best way to approach digging the tunnel. Should I manure now? Cover the beds?

Also, what can I start off now? Anything? I am going to build some staging to the front of the tunnel.

Well done Wizer, thats alot of work!

Came home on Sunday, to find a great rip in the front of mine too. Spent most of the daylight hours yesterday, just trying to piece and stick it all together. Its not easy is it!

no its not Jen, I used the thick polytunnel tape. It seems to be holding for now. Just hope it lasts me at least one season.

Well done Wizer. I remember your first posts when you were an absolute beginner. I enjoyed looking at your dinner then. What are you cooking these days. Show us a pic. You've come a long way. You could definately be planting garlic now but it doesn't have to be in the polytunnel, it's perfectly hardy. I'm sure there are things you could be growing but at this time of the year light is the problem. Growlights perhaps ? I've started some peppers on the windowsill. All well so far but just have to wait and see how they do. Good luck with whatever you start with.
