  • Grobag compost

    Hi All
I grow in containers and have a GH. I use a Veg. compost in all my pots and containers. After I have pulled my veg from this compost, can I reuse it. It seems to dry out a lot.
I grew some Spring Onoins and they leave a lot of roots behind. Should I just throw it out and get some new compost!!!!

It won't have much goodness left in it, but can be used as a filler for next year ... I put it at the bottom of my pots, and top up with new compost

If you've got a compost heap on the go, you could add it to that and it will help add body to the resulting compost. I always empty my pots, hanging baskets and growbags into my heaps.

Alternatively, you could apply it as a mulch round things like courgettes or fruit bushes. Water the soil round the plant really well first, then put the spent compost on top in a layer approx 2-3" thick, and this will help prevent evaporation.

You can revitalise it a bit with general purpose fertiliser and grow a different type of crop, but I usually either add mine to the compost heap or chuck it on the borders.

I've got masses of the stuff. I had 12 Spud tub this year and all my tom & pepper pots. It's only my second year and last year I just dug it into my poor quality clay soil, but this year I have way too much. I can't even put it on my compost I have that much.

          Any ideas anybody?

I know what you mean. I have no soil at all, so nowhere to dig it in.

I would: scrape out half from each pot and refill with fresh next time you plant.

use the scraped-out old compost as a mulch on your soil (no need to dig it in, in fact the worms prefer to do it themselves)
