  • Anyone tried making a slow drip bottle irrigation system?

I have just found this and although I have seen drip feeding before using plastic bottles I haven't seen anything with a balloon connected like this one.

      Nope, sorry!

But I have been saving the bags out of wine boxes. The ones with the screw cap dispenser, (not the push-button ones) so I can rig up a watering system. Haven't sussed it all out yet though!

For the past few years 21, I have experimented and I have tried (almost the same anyway) to do as eHow shows. It worked well initially but then would stop and have to be adjusted. The whole point of it was so that I could water some toms etc when away for a few days. The way I did it was not really a raging success. However, I have never seen that about the balloon being used as a diaphragm so I am going to give it another go this year.
Thanks for the link, made very interesting reading. Sanjo

Yep, I may give it a go too and see how I go.

The last couple of years I have tried various sized containers, from 1 litre to 2 1/2 litres. I've either kept the whole cap on and used a needle (so very fine) to make a hole in the shoulder and another in the bottom or made a very small hole in the lid with the fine hole in the bottom and then inverted the bottle so the top was down in the compost
My thought was that a full bottle of water would have displaced the air and so as the water dripped out then a vacuum would be made and the flow stop. That was my reason for the fine hole.
It would only work for a short time and I seemed to be down there every night adjusting it which sort of defeated the whole idea!
Anyway, 21, like you I am going to have another try.
Physics (?) was never a strong point. I know what I want but not always how to do it.
That's the beauty of this site. Tips and helping each other.
Be interesting to see what happens eh?

Yep, I think the hardest thing is going to be trying to find a balloon in my daughters bedroom! She is 10 and hasn't got the hang of putting everything away after using it yet.
