Cheap Electric Propagators

Looking to purchase meself an electric propagator, something under £30, Has anyone got any recommendations? Would rather get one someone has got and has success with.

Mine was free but then again I scrounged it off my grandad when he gave up on his greenhouse so not much help for you!

I have just recently purchased a 'Stewart' single seedtray propogator from my local garden centre for £14.99 but if you shop around you may get one cheaper!

Mine is now set up on my window sill with four varieties of onions set away from seed in smaller trays. It must work because I seem to have had good germination results!

I did notice the same propogator at my local Homebase at £15.99!

Hi Andrew,

A friend of mine has 2 or 3 of the 7 tray ones. They aren't fullsize trays but 1/4 sized but as you don't have a huge garden but grow lots of types it maybe of more use to you.

Not sure how much they are though.

I bought a Sankey heated propagator from the local wyevale for £12.99, only sowed seeds on Sunday so will let you know.
Monday I bought a Parasene 'fast grow' propagator from homebase for £16.99 again will have to let you know not sure how long onions are supposed to take to germinate.

In various gardening magazines for the last couple of years, one windowsill propogator seemed to be continually voted as the best in it's price range. Not sure what the actual name is but Two Wests sell it for £29.95, Their ref is PRWS. It has the 7 x 2" deep, quarter size seed trays with lids so suitable for smaller plots. Power consumption is 15W. This may be the same propogator that Nick is referring to.

Andrew - I got a big one from N R Kays last year for 29.99, I think the actual RRP was over £40, so might be worth giving them a look. I used it last year and can get three half trays and about five pots in it and it has quite a high plastic cover. I was quite impressed with it and will be using it alot more this year.

My "big one" is a Sankey Growarm 300 Heated Propagator and NR Kays are selling them now for £28.50. Holds 3 x 22cm seed trays and 5 x 9cm flower pots.

We've had a Sankey bought from Focus (on a half-price offer) for about 6 years now. I think its a 300, its 37x58 cm and came with 3 trays & 5 pots and some capillary matting.

Highly recommended and not too small or too big, we always seem to find some seed to start off in it from now 'til late spring.

As reported earlier I bought a sankey and a parasene at the weekend, sowed various seeds and I'm happy to report they have all started to germinate. Yippee!!

Thanks, folks, for the tip about the Sankey propagator. By the way, I heard that Parasene are in receivership, so maybe best avoided meantime? Sorry, Bex!
