  • Wanted: Source for cheap polytunnel plastic.

    Hi Folks,

I'm going to build a polytunnel for my plot as for the time being I can't see a way to afford a greenhouse. There's a chance I could come across a mountain of free wood and glass but if that doesn't happen I'll be going with poly.

Now, the poly cover that goes on the tunnel seems pretty pricey in the couple of places I've looked so far so I'm hoping someone can suggest a good place to get some nice and cheap. I know it needs replacing every few years, so expect the supply of second hand stuff in good condition to be quite thin on the ground.

One thought I had was that maybe I could find some that was being thrown out by someone with a much bigger tunnel that has suffered a rip (I believe they are difficult to repair properly)
If someone with a large tunnel was re-covering it after a rip I could probably salvage a piece suitable for the one I'm making.

Dimensions: I expect the footprint will be somewhere around 5.5m (18') long by 2.5m (8'3") to 3m (9'11") wide.
I expect the apex to be somewhere in the region of 2.5m (8'3") though possibly lower.
Obviously I'll be needing enough to cover the ends too.

So, any suggestions? Either somewhere online or relatively close to Manchester?
The closer I can get to "free" the better as I'm starting this plot on a pretty tight budget, and I'd like to spend as much as possible on materials for things that will last like my compost bins, cold frames and on seeds.

    Cheers!

    Freecycle?
but bearing in mind that a lot of old greenhouses are in old people's gardens, and they don't use t'internet, it would be worth leafleting a likely area.

My neighbour has got 4 greenhouses and 3 sheds like that: didn't pay a penny. They were glad to have them taken away

I've got my eye on Freecycle (well, Realcycle actually because Freecycle annoys the hell out of me with the way it divides Manchester into chunks purely because the moderators can't be fussed changing things and it's all hidden under some nonsensical argument about the environment - but I'm gonna stop ranting now before I really get started).

Not placed a wanted ad yet but will get around to it. Hadn't thought about leafleting though. Maybe I'll get on Google Earth or that Bing Maps with the "Birds Eye" view and see who's got one they might not want.

Did your neighbour have to pay for any/all of them?

With the marvel that is online mapping with arial and satellite photographs I've now located 6 definite greenhouses and about 3 possibles within walking distance of my house.

I'm going to put some sort of leaflet together and will drop them around soon. Probably for a break from work tomorrow at a guess.

I'll extend the search when I can be bothered looking into peoples gardens from outer space again (if I've not already got one by then that is).

I can recommend Freecycle and the likes, I have got two off it this year, ok had to dismantle and transport, but thats no chore. I could never afford to buy them plus I love the fact that they will be put back to good use.

If you have to buy it, try LBS Garden Warehouse/Northern Polytunnels, Premier Polytunnels and First Tunnels.

                    Hello there.

If you are still interested in a polythene cover for your greenhouse/polytunnel, then there are quite a few polytunnel companies in East Lancashire which may take your fancy. (There are four of us in the little borough of Pendle alone!)

Many companies have offers on their products at this time of year.

I would also recommend having a peek at ebay....

I must admit, I've never heard of Freecycle before, but I'm interested to see what they do!

Good luck! Let us know how you get on.

                    Deborah (Premier).

                      Thanks all.

I've put a Wanted ad for a greenhouse up on Realcycle. We'll see what happens. I'll also have a look around for greenhouses and polytunnel coverings on ebay. I hadn't thought of looking on there for some reason so I'll have a look when I've got a bit of breathing room with work.

                      Thanks for the suggestions Sarah,

I hadn't realised there were so many polytunnel companies around these parts. I'll be sure to look into it if the hunt for a free greenhouse doesn't work out.

Freecycle and Realcycle are nothing more than people and companies giving stuff away. If you've got something, you place an offer on the board and anyone who wants it contacts you. If you want something you ask for it and if anyone has one they contact you.

Simple enough really, and a good idea too if my opinion counts for anything.

I've just had a quick look at the Freecycle and Realcycle websites and I agree - it is a great idea!

                        Have a good weekend.

Well, after almost a week of waiting nad an email chasing it up, my "greenhouse wanted" ad has finally made it onto the local Realcycle group.

Now I've just got to sit back and wait for the torrent of offers to come in... (yea right! haha).

A polytunnel is still on the cards for the time being though.
