  • Scaffolding for Poly

    Hi all.

My mate told me that I can build a polytunnel from old scaffolding poles, and other things.

Where does one acquire these? I'll ask next time I see some scaffolders at work, but if anybody else has done tis then I'd appreciate the advice.

    Thanks

    David

    Hi David
I built a polytunnel with treated wooden poles and half poles that the polythene sits on.
The polythene which is especially for tunnels, you can buy on line.
Most people complain that their tunnels are too small, mine is 15m x 15m and cost about £500, not counting my labour of course. Wood is easy to work with and you can sort of make it up as you go along if you feel one part needs more strength.
Have a look at our blog to see the results!

I built some cold frames along similar lines, using timber frames with polythene stretched across and stapled.
I think timber would be easier to work with but old scaffolding poles would be really solid.
Maybe a combination of the two would be even better.
Try ringing round some scaffolding companies for prices of old poles, they have to replace them after so many years anyway.
Don't forget to report back and let us know how you get on
        Good luck

I love it when a plan comes together :-)

I think a homebuilt (in my case botched) polytunnel is better than any bought item. You know exactly how it was built and should be able to fix it when the worst happens - lol!
