I planted some mizuna a short while ago & that has germinated & is said to withstand lower temperatures.. My local greengrocer sells large polystyrene boxes for 30p so I planted them in one of those as some sort of insulation but that`s my 1st experiment with the box so I can`t recommend it yet. Mizune is quite strong but is good when mixed with other lettuce.
I'm going to sow some Feltham First peas tomorrow in modules and overwinter them in my greenhouse. In addition I have broad beans and spring onion (white Lisbon) which I reckon you can still get away with sowing now.
Like you, I've just got a greenhouse and can't wait to get started properly so will be interested to see the responses you get. A couple of weeks ago I put in a pot of winter salad mix (think I got the seeds free with something) and it's sprouting baby leaves already. I also sowed some sweet pea seeds and put them in one of those unheated propagators (is that how you spell it?) on the greenhouse staging, they also have sprouted and look OK. I keep looking at the seed packets but they all seem to suggest waiting to sow, there must be something else we can grow!
Like all of you I can't bear to see the greenhouse empty! So yesterday I sowed some salad leaves, some spring onions and some radishes. It was a horrible afternoon, couldn't go out in the garden or on the plot so I sorted out all my seeds and found lots of half used packets. The excuse I gave myself was that they might 'go off', so I decided to give it a go. My g'house is unheated but I didn't think of using polystyrene boxes - that's a good idea Trish. I did wet my compost with tepid water though - thought it might help.
