In focus today I have bought a stand of 4 shelves wich is covered by zipped plastice for plants etc. It was half price.

when I propargate my seeds and they start showing through I have no where other than the polytunnel to keep them while growing I thought I could put this flower/veg rack in the polytunnel not as good as a heated greenhouse, but hope it might help

You would in fact have a double glazed area, the poly tunnel and the plastic covered thingy. But plastic does not hold heat like glass and without an actual heater I think that you could only hope for a degree or two maximum extra. I suppose you could nip out every night before you loose the heat of the day and wrap it in Bubble wrap or similar to help hold the heat

Sorry to be a pessermist, perhaps other Grapes have some other suggestions.

I double walled a 6x8 polyshed I have on the back of the greenhouse. On cloudy days, the internal temp was up 2 or 3 degrees. When the sun came out (anybody remember what it looks like?) add 20 degrees. The problem is that at this time of year, the temp will drop like a stone at night without background heating.

I tried this one year for germinating chilis and tomatoes - it worked to a certain extent, but you have to be extra zealous about opening everything up on sunny days so the seedlings don't fry, and shutting it all up before the warmth dissipates in the evening. It's good for conserving moisture though and I noticed the trays didn't dry out quite as much as the ones sat on the greenhouse staging - but then the front of the mini greenhouse didn't unzip all the way to the top and there was a 'reservoir' of moist air in the top 8" of the thing.

I have one of these and I put it up on blocks in the greenhouse with one of those small parifin heaters below. Works well the heater just keeps the temp up and any heat lost is used in the rest of the greenhouse. It uses about a gallon in 14 days so a £1 a week no bad.

Last year being my first, I planted my seeds and germinated them in just my little four shelf greenhouse - I didn't even have a cold frame - just put the trays outside when the weather was good and then back inside the little plastic greenhouse at night. Everything worked a treat!

I've now got my proper greenhouse and OH has rigged up one of the plastic covers as shelter for a few things growing in there at the mo - it can't do any harm and I couldnt get enough of the large bubble wrap as insulation.

Worth a try methinks. DDL

It depends what you're trying to achieve Kittykat. If you're just aiming for frost free this will work and give you several extra degrees of protection on a really frosty night. As a general growing method I think you might run into more problems than you get advantages.
I agree with DDL about the advantages of outdoor growing. I put my seedlings outdoors as much as possible on milder days, and then indoors at night until they get too big and have to go in the greenhouse. By that time it's April and I put a bit of overnight heating on for them, just about 6* to stop them getting checked. That way it's not too expensive. I use an electric fan heater. I find this the most controllable.

i bought a mini greenhouse thing too and have planted 3 bulbs of garlic in a big pot then sown some 9 broad beans in little pots and just going to see how i get on have also bought a fleece to put on top but not put on yet should i
