  • How do you keep yours open? Greenhouse door that is!

The title says it all really. Since the big freeze started, Im have real problems opening my greenhouse door. I need daily access as my chooks are in the greenhouse over the winter. I panicked the other day - I'd gone in to feed the girls and, as usual, shut the door behind me. Then I couldn't get out!
Any tips, help, advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance.
PS Its a sliding type door

I had ths a few weeks ago, mines a slide door & i sprayed the frame & the door runners with WD40 & it seems to have done the trick, I try & remember to do it every few days, but you'd need to make sure the chooks weren't nearby

I use WD40 on mine as well, I don't need to go in every day though only when I need some lettuce.

Had a similar problem with the guineapig hutch door since the freeze. The bedding half door freezes and sticks so I have been seen on my hands and knees in the snow reaching through the run to bash the door open from the inside. The things we do for the love of our pets!!

            Me too!
I usually feed them before I go out, so I chuck the garage key into their hutch (I can't be bothered to go back in the house usually).

Today I went to get the garage key back from the pigs and the wretched door wouldn't open.
I had to pour the watering can on the lock (watering can frozen solid though, so had to get fresh from the water butt, after smashing the ice)

What a palaver. I might just bring the girls inside for the duration, do you think Himself would notice?

Probably not. And at least the guineagirls make nice noises, not like himself snoring all night.

Might be a daft suggestion but would vaseline work?

Not a bad idea! I had a thought - Mr DDL has a tub of grease in his garage for greasing up car/bike type things......well, he did. I've pinched it! I put a good dollop all along both top and bottom runners yesterday. I've opened the door a lot easier today. Lets hope it works.

I can't imagine why my (sliding) door hasn't (yet!) frozen shut - when you consider we had -18 a couple nights ago
