  • heating a GH cost gas vs electric

    Hi,

My new greenhouse could have mains electricity with a bit of jiggery pokery, but i was also considering propane.

Has anyone actually done any costings of gas vs electric? i obviously want to keep the costs down so running costs are most important although the higher costs of a propane heater is obviously a considerable factor, as would the initial bottle plus refills.

    Any ideas anyone?

    tia.

I use an electric heater with a thermostat, haven't heard the good lady complaining about the electricity bill. I suppose the secret is in insulating your greenhouse as well as u can. The other thing is that it is dry heat no condensation, of course the other advantage is you plug it in and u've nothing else to do until the time comes for it to be put away for the season.

I've tried electric, parafin and gas. Gas has my vote. Hubby went mental when he watched the meter go into overdrive when using electricity. Parafin was smelly and can cost quite a lot. A 19 k gas bottle costs me around £23 and works out between £3 - £4 per week. I use a couple of heated propagators for keeping the chill of cuttings over winter and then fire up the heaters when I start to sow seeds around January, even then I sow the seed and keep them on a window in the house until they germinate and then transfer to a 'slightly' heated greenhouse. Hope this helps
