  • Automatic vent opener

    Hi Everyone,
I am looking for advice on which Auto vent opener to buy.
My Greenhouse is a basic 6x6 one so i am wondering if any opener will do or if there are particular ones to look for/avoid?

    cheers
    Steve

I just bought a cheap one from B&Q or similar and it's been great. If you've got a standard type of greenhouse it shouldn't be a problem.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I have Lady S. sleep outside the greenhouse. In summer she can open the vents if it is too warm and in winter she can get out of her sleeping bag (£1.47p from a car boot) and light the paraffin heater in the green house. I am very considerate and have turned the thermometer round so she can see it without having to leave the sleeping bag thus eliminating unnecessary visits to the g.house. I also provide a candle (price deducted from her house-keeping) which she can light if the temperature is not too far below the required level. I reckon I am the kindest husband since Homer Simpson, or should that be Dr. Crippen?
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

We have an auto opener yet too be fitted. What would be the right temp for it to open?

Back on serious Binley. It depends what you're growing. Plus vents are to let condensation and moisture out as much as excessive heat. You can really only experiment depending on your local conditions. I have 2 greenhouses one for toms cucs etc. and one where I keep my prized tropicals. The last couple of years the tropical house hasn't been open at all with our summers. The 'ordinary' one I have it set at about 22 or 23C even toms don't like it roasting.

It'll probably be toms, aubs and chillies. Maybe a melon or two. We're in the midlands so it'll be a bit warmer than your neck of the woods.

Why does everyone assume that further south means warmer? It is true that our summers, because of the sea breezes, are, on a sunny day a degree or two cooler than where you are, but in the depths of winter we are probably 3 to 5 degrees C warmer than the midlands. This coast is USDA zone equivalent 8b. 10 miles inland and 50 miles south is actually zone 8a. The USDA zones are set on minimum winter temperatures. One of the best private palm tree collections in the UK is at Chester-le-Street. It happens to be in a very mild area, purely by fluke. I have one area in my garden which was designed and built by a friend and neighbour for me which in winter is always 2 oC warmer than any other garden area. That can make quite a difference. And no, I am not rich,he is a keen gardener himself and when he found out about my passion for exotic plants he did it for a couple of nights at my expense in the local pub. The way he built the walls and the materials used (mainly recycled) are a work of genius.

Jo mines set to open at 18c, not sure if its the correct temp to use but it does take a bit of time to fully open. When I first fitted mine last year it used to fascinate me watching it open once it reached that temp.

Ok I've had me wrist slapped.

(my SIL lives in Darlington and it's always colder there than here so I guess I just assumed. ) Hangs head in shame.

I've ordered this one as it was recommended for polycarb panels.
