  • Coldframe lid

I have just managed to get a couple of pallets from freecycle so thought I'd try making my own coldframe - I'd been looking to buy one anyway so though this might save me a few quid. The only thing I'm now stuck with is where on earth do I get somthing clear eg polycarbonate, for the lid? Polycarbonate sheeting seems to come in huge sizes or in large packs and I only need one smallish piece. Does anyone know of anywhere I can pick this up? I dont want to end up spending so much on the lid that it would have ended up being cheaper to just buy the coldframe!! Otherwise does anyone have any alternative suggestions for other materials? Glass is out due to having a very clumsy small child!!

    Thanks in advance!

I just discovered that we had a reinforced glass shelf from our old fridge tucked away in a cupboard. That's going to be my lid. My friend used an old double glazed door he was given for his and another friend uses old windows but you'd want a double glazed one probably to be strong enough to be safe for your child. I know that Wickes sell polycarbonate sheeting (corrugated I think) for not very much as my OH researched that to make me a GH/ lean to this year.

It's a shame you don't live nearer Slough i,ve got some corrugated sheeting sat on the allotment you could have had, I would use this myself, not too dear in the D.I.Y stores and easy to cut and use.

          All the best,Ian

I have got some large cupboard drawers that I'm planning to make into cold frames. Will try the idea of the polycarbonate sheet over the top. I expect it will go in a wooden frame to sit on the boxes.

On pondering this some more (as it is taking forever to split up the pallets) I am wondering if a double layer if polythene sheeting will do for the lid? We have loads in our shed sio would just need to make a wooden frame and stretch the sheeting over it. What do you think?
