I wouldn't recomend putting seedlings of tender fruit and veg in a greenhouse (unless heated) for qutie a while yet though as it can get very cold at night.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I have to agree with Alison, I almost lost some seedlings but thanks to Zazen, I moved them from unheated to heated GH & they are now fine.

I put a basil in every tomato plant last year, they work well together.

Since a few of you have mentioned them -Thought that you shouldn't grow melon and cucumber together as they could cros pollinate

Thanks elsie, I've got ridge cucumbers so I plan to grow them outside over pergola along with butternut squash.............now theres a thought, can they go together as I thought melon & squash were the same family.

trying to find answer to my own question but have found this about families - quite a long quote!

"Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus), cucumber (Cucumis sativus), and melon (Cucumis melo) are major crop species in the cucurbit or vine-crop family (the Cucurbitaceae), an important family of flowering plants (the angiosperms). The family also includes squash, pumpkin, and gourds.

Cucumber, melon, and watermelon are originally from the Old World (primarily Africa and Asia). Although they are in the same family (Cucurbitaceae) with the squashes, pumpkins, and gourds (mostly of the genus Cucurbita), they are only distantly related. The Cucurbita species are from the New World (primarily Central and South America)."

They won't cross pollinate as although they're of the same family (cucurbitaceae), they're different species and anyway, if wouldn't matter if they did cross if you were only wanting to eat them rather than seed save.

As they're different species I don't see how they'd naturally cross and I've certainly grown them in pots next to each other without problems so I wouldn't worry.

I grew cucumber and melons next to each other in the greenhouse last year and they tasted lovely.
Shame I didn't realise earlier that you don't treat melons like tomatoes and remove all the side shoots!!!

Happy with this news, as we now have a greenhouse and wanted to try cucumber and melon this year.
