  • Polytunnel Repair Help!!

I have a 30ftx 10ft polytunnel on my allotment and i have noticed that there are puncture holes in the roof above the ridge. What is the best way to get up there to repair it?? (I have ordered my repair tape and it is on its way)

    Many thanks

    Very carefully??

You need to tape both sides of the holes... we repaired damage to the top with a short stepladder, and Mr OWG resting on the hoop, rather than the plastic... it was a bit of a hold-your-breath moment when he leaned out to stick the tape on!

      Did this myself in Feb.

Stuck a bit of tape to the end of a cane. Stood on water trough a leaned over let the tape fall on the tunnel and then carefully used the cane to press it down. Put a few pieces on and then did inside.

      Worked a treat

These puncture holes are usually caused by birds pecking at the polythene when they see insects on the inside of the polythene. You can usually tell if it's birds as the hole is sort of "star-shaped".

If the holes aren't too big - less than an inch, it should be sufficient to just tape the inside with 3 inch (or wider) tape. Make sure the polythene is clean and dry before you tape it to ensure good adhesion. Cut the tape with sharp scissors as the edges of the tape will stick better. If you try to tear the tape it won't stick properly.

I agree Stuart, I see them trying to do that on a tunnel a couple of plots away from mine. They're a PITA! My dog dislikes crows and rooks (who are the main culprit on our site) and chases them off. Maybe I should hire her out...

I wonder if it might be worth setting up a bird feeding station well away from the tunnel?

when youn repair it's better if you overlap the pieces of tape in an 'X' shape - the middle of the x being over the hole.

I walked into my polytunnel yesterday, shut the door behind me and infront of me was a startled cat. It had obviously been sun bathing. Anyway, It didnt know which way to go and started leaping and clawing at the polythene trying to get out! I think I'll need some repair tape too.
