  • Siting advice needed

Hi all, newbie here so apologies if this has already been answered, did look but couldn't see.

We're shortly moving to a new house with an east facing garden, arranged over 6 terraces sloping upwards away from the house. The plan is bottom 3 to be garden (w. lettuce/herbs) and the top for veg. Level 4 is currently concrete/paved slab and thats the potential home for my greenhouse.

So, in thinking about what to buy I've seen lots about get the biggest and the debate about glass v polycarbonate, not sure on that one yet. My question though is which direction should I site it? Ridge running EW or NS? NS would give more room for a bigger gh but not get the S sun on a roof section which to me seems to be a good idea, right?

Also, and less important at this stage, I'm assuming that putting it on the concrete slab is actually good? Do frames have screw holes or similar to anchor it down?

    Thanks for any replies

Firstly, welcome to the vine mike, below is a link regarding the positioning of a GH. I think the censors is to run the ridge EW.

With regards to anchoring it down, I sat mine in breeze blocks, on top of which I put some 2x1 timber, then fastened the GH to the timber, holes had to be drilled in the GH but not a hard job.

just reviving my original q (thanks bigmally for your reply).

We have the house now, hoping to buy gh soon. If I site it E-W I am probably limited to 6ft gh but N-S would allow for a bigger one; given that these two factors are often said to be most important, which one takes precedent!?!

Also, any views on Palram? B&Q have this http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=10086602&fh_view_size=10&fh_eds=%3f&fh_location=%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB%2fcategories%3C{9372012}%2fcategories%3C{9372017}%2fcategories%3C{9372059}%2fspecificationsProductType%3daluminium_frame_greenhouses%2ffeaturesBrand%3dPalram&fh_refview=lister&ts=1274022716111&isSearch=false which is stupid cheap it seems at under £125 (although not in stock at the moment). Polycarbonate is preferred as we have quite a few young kids in the family that visit often and will have our own in a few years.

      Cheers

I'd go for the bigger one, my GH is north to south and I grow fine tomatoes in it. Once the sun gets higher in the sky, I don't think it makes alot of difference.

I agree with womble, if I was to be given a choice, it would have to be a larger greenhouse.

The only problem, is when you work how much each tomato grown costs. I've had 2 full years growing in mine, at a very rough working out I'm about a pound per tomato atm

Hopefully by the time I'm retired, they will be cheaper than buying them from the shops.

Bit delayed but thank you. Buying the bigger one makes sense and although its NS siting it would also be inline with the prevailing wind which seems logical (to me anyway!).

Fingers crossed we move in a few weeks and then the gh gets bought shortly after!
