  • HELP! Greenhouse building problem

    Anyone about?

We are assembling my Simplicity Stramshall greenhouse today and we are stuck

I have phoned the Greenhouse People and they were as helpful as possible but the problem remains. I am gutted

Has anyone assembled one and had problems assembling the front and back gables?

WS I haven't put one of those together, but perhaps if you give us more details of the problem you are facing (is it the bars, the glazing?) some real knowledgable folks on here will be able to assist.

Good luck and once it is up, enjoy!

      Hi Dogsbody

I am not sure how to do links so hope this works

      http://www.greenhousepeople.co.uk/fi...Simplicity.pdf

On page 8 there is a join at the front eaves shown in a square marked 3. This is the problem area.

On page 9 it shows how to attach the upright (30) to the roof (33) with a triangular metal plate. The plate has 4 holes in it but these holes do not line up with the upright (30) and the roof (33). Same with the other side and the back gable. The holes are about a quarter inch out of whack so the bolts will not fit through to attach them.

The GH People guys says the triangular plate is a standard bit on most of the GHs. He suggests we take photos and email them in for James to look at on Monday.

I was so looking forward to having my GH this weekend

S'ok Grapes. I have a friend coming to give a second opinion in the morning and I have taken pics of the problem to send to the GH People.

I posted on the off chance that someone had a similar experiience. It was a bit of a long shot, but thanks anyway.

Will post a pic of my gorgeous black greenhouse when it is finished

Hi WS, I've just been outside to measure the plates on my similar GH. The plate measures 9.5cm x 9.5cm x 15cm.....................The distance between vertical bolt holes is 5cm & the distance between the heave bolt holes is also 5cm. Looking at it, I cannot see any reason for it not fitting unless your verticals 30 & 31 are upside down or 33 & 34 are the wrong way round. Check the distance between the bolt holes on the uprights & see if they marry the plate. Difficult to explain.

Thanks Bigmallly. Our brackets are the same size as yours, but the holes are in different places.

Problem solved now. Sent pics off to the techie guy and it seems we had a rogue batch of brackets. They despatched a correct set immediately and we received them today. Perfect fit

That's brilliant news WS, glad you got it sorted, I know it is so frustrating when things don't fit & then wonder what you've done wrong.

Glad to hear your prob is sorted Windy-Sindy and look forward to the pics.

I've spent all of today trying to put up a polycarbonate glazed lean to on the side of the garage and think that it just might be beyond me (Making up Ikea flat packs with ease has lulled me into thinking I could do it!!!)

My neighbour kindly lent me a proffesional hammer drill to make holes in the brick and slabs to secure the base. I had trouble just LIFTING the drill, it was so heavy and it took all morning to drill 8 holes and fix the base.
I drafted in the OH this afternoon and we have made up the front and sides BUT my measurements for the height are adrift!!!!!!!!!

We have wooden barge boards on the side of the garage, which the OH sez wont come off.( my idea was to remove the barge boards!)
If we attach the back of the greenhouse to these, we will end up with a gap on the back wall uprights lower down.
Does anyone know of something solid that I could use as a filler for this gap?

The alternative is to try and saw out some grooves in the wooden barge boards, so the back uprights are flush to the garage wall.OH now taken his bat home and not available to help till Saturday.

Oh I wish I'd found somebody to put the S*DD*ng thing up for me!!
Anyone on here in Leeds who will do it for £100 cash?????

Like you Windy-Sindy, I wanted my greenhouse for this weekend. Boo hoo !

                    Hi Maddie

Sorry I don't know what to suggest greenhouse building wise.

You might want to start a fresh thread here though. People might assume that this is just the "Sindy moaning about her GH" thread and not realise that you have a problem.

A new thread might generate more interest and help. Good luck and remember we will need pics of the GH when it is up!

Hi Maddie, I'm assuming the bargeboard protrude out from the bottom. Fasten some timber to the garage then screw the GH to the timber. Unless I have the vision all wrong. Where in Leeds are you?

As BM say's put battens on the wall where the g/house will go, fix the battens to the wall and the g/house to the battens. The battens need to be the same thickness as the barge boards
Never test the depth of the water with both feet

The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory....

Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

It's now 99% up and running!
The barge boards are at the top of the wall. Greenhouse top is attached to the bargeboards and the uprights are attached very firmly to the wall of the garage.
Turns out the garage is built from engineering(?) bricks....very hard, so explains why I had difficulty drilling them!

We have a tapered gap between the greenhouse frame and the garage wall, so will infill with timber and the trusty silicone gun before the end of the year.

Instructions for erection were NOT easy to follow and needed a certain creativity!
Supplied clamps for fitting the polycarbonate panels to the frame just would NOT work....so we had to leave them out and seal up the polcarbonate panels with a silicone gun.

Our neighbours came over and spent the best part of a day putting the thing up with us!!I owe them at least 2 bottles of wine and loads of seedlings as a result!

All that is left is the auto vent to fit and it seems that I'll have to drill out the existing holes to fit the clamps, despite ordering the vent that went with the greenhouse( Annoying as I could bought it cheaper elsewhere...the point of getting a "Gardman" vent for a "Gardman" greenhouse was so I didn't have to prat about at the top of a stepladder drilling holes!)

I am also having terrible problems as the wall greenhouse I have bought has the worst set of instructions I have ever seen! My friend and I spent a solid after noon on it and then went the pub in need of a stiff drink!

I currently have the frame of the greenhouse up with a small plastic greehouse inside which is holding all my plants. Hopefully in the next few weeks we'll feel strong enough to continue. I shall owe her lots of wine by the time it is finished!

Try & put some pics up Helen with the problems you are having. They are great once up but can be a pain in the bum to build.
