Once I came across one of american forums-they were discussing the variety common here, branded over there as heirloom(tomato).
As for the greenhouse size-depends where the guy lives as he can grow some stuff outside if he's in the right location.
I'd be interested in Grumpy F5(love the name) and what would be the cross between Green Giant and Yellow Submarine?
Some of the name are Russian-but I can't imagine growing tomatoes in Siberia...

Think about where the tomato comes from. They have many more varieties than we do and have the right climate in many parts of the states too

In many areas they can grow outdoors which does increase the possibilities!
The only one from there that I have is Brandywine - though I do have Cherokee Purple that's not on the list.

The thing is, it's dead easy to cross tomatoes and make your own variety. I've done it. Then you swap your variety with other people's and you get a massive list of types. We could do it here but people generally don't.

Wow ... well almost everything in the USA is done on a bigger scale. And I thought my patio had been taken over by my tomatoes!

I'm originally from Connecticut, in the region of New England. That's a USDA Zone 5, so fairly far north but the summer is hot and humid (tomatoes' favourite conditions) so we only ever grow tomatoes outdoors. We usually have so many some rot on the vine before we can harvest them. As kids we used to throw them onto the road to watch other over-ripe ones burst. This is my first proper attempt to grow them in the UK (outdoors) and it's so frustrating! The varieties here are different from in the USA, though, rather than simply less. I don't think it's much more restrictive as far as variety as long as you know which UK suppliers to use. The Russian varieties (Black Krim, etc.), for instance, were not something I ever saw at home, only here.

Oh, and Geeboss, I would love to know the details of your growing system. I remember K-town being warmer in summer than here in the UK but I might wing it here anyway!

Tomatoes grow really easily in some places in the States. Where I'm from, near Philadelphia (north east), I know lots of people grow tomatoes outdoors because they do so well in the area with minimal effort. Most people I know there, if they're going to grow only one thing, that one thing will be tomatoes.
