  • Greenhouse or Polytunnel?

    Hi
Are there any benefits of using a polytunnel as opposed to using a greenhouse?
Size for size polytunnels seem to be cheaper, but both seem to be used for the same purpose. Polytunnels are I think available in larger sizes. I want a 10'x8' as thats about all the space i want to give up for it.
Do you have a preference? I just like to know the pros and cons
    Cheers

Greenhouses last longer, and are generally considered better as they have straight sides, so less wasted space. Also, they make rainwater harvesting very easy. However, Polytunnels are now available with straight sides too!

I have the use of a Greenhouse, and love it. I have a Polytunnel frame, but haven't got the cover and stuff for it yet as we are supposed to be moving. Maybe I should tempt fate and put it up!

Sorry, I'm no help - only you can decide what you want. I'd suggest viewing as many as you can, and talking to the owners/users about the benefits.

We went for the polytunnel, as it was miles and miles cheaper than a greenhouse of the same size would have been.

We can't harvest rainwater with it, and I realise the cover will need replacing in 5-7 years, but that's OK.

I've not had any issues with the sloping sides - my polytunnel is 7ft high in the middle of the frame, so I guess it depends how you'll set beds out etc in it.

We have a 30ft x 10ft (7ft high) tunnel, with an irrigation system and double front doors. It cost about £600. I can't imagine what a 30ft greenhouse would have cost us!!!

I have both, a 6' square greenhouse at home which is all I have room for and a 12' x 20' polytunnel at the plot. Love both even though I've only had the polytunnel for a few months am already harvesting mange tout and shortly potatoes and that's before the summer crops. Basically I love it as it's bigger. The greenhouse is easier to ventilate and you can screw supports into it for vines without worrying about damaging it but they do cost a heck of a lot.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

          Thanks

Hey, thanks for your help, I think I'll go for a greenhouse, although they are more expensive I prefer the look of a decent greenhouse. All I need do is save some pennies.. simple
          Cheers
