  • Greenhouse ventilation

    Hi guys,

Just got a new greenhouse and I was wondering, when do I leave the window open and when do i leave the door open and how open? also do I leave them open over night? Do I need to cover the doors and windows with netting to keep nasties out?

This time of year a bit of ventilation/air movement will do a lot of good. If you can be arsed you could close the window on chilly nights but personally I never bother.
The temp can really skyrocket when the sun comes out so its best to ventilate. Toms like a humid atmosphere also, so water the path when you water the plants to increase humidity!
Congratulation btw, for getting the new greenhouse up and running in time for the growing season!

It would be better to close the windows on cooler nights. It's not so much the actual temperature as the temperature range that can affect plant growth. A hot day followed by cold night air will present a shock to the plants and they will respond accordingly.

Even easier - get yourself an automatic window opener. Not very expensive and a great asset to any GH.

          Hi Haza

Patchninja has the right solution if you can do that, which will save a lot of time.
All the other comments should be adhered to, and I have a little section on my blog about ventilation which might give you a few tips as this question has come up a few times in the past.

I opened the window 3 weeks ago and am planning on closing it around Sept/Oct.

I have the door open in the day as well, but do close it at night [mainly to stop any wild animals going in for a chomp of my prime seedlings].

As has already been said, buy an automatic vent opener, they're only £20. I couldn't do without it.
