  • Tomatoes not forming !!

The tomato plants in my unheated greenhouse are not forming/or forming very few tomatoes - the flowers seem to be drying up and falling off
    Any comments ?
    Thanks - cheers

Could it be faulty pollination? If it is, try the paintbrush trick!
Welcome to the vine by the way!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

      Hi Nick, and welcome

It could be any number of reasons, but a picture would really help, post it as attachment and it will show up as thumbnail.

Or size of plant and growing medium etc.

When the flower dries up and falls off there is a tiny tomato underneath. Just check.

I sometimes find that the first set of flowers don't set very well.

At this time of year the greenhouse can get very hot which kills pollen (or at least stops flowers pollinating properly) and a young plant seems more susceptible to it. When the plants get bigger they seem to cope better.

Try and keep the heat off your plants.

Thanks teakdesk .... Your comment rings bells as the flower in its entirety is falling off and just leaving a bare stalk and the newer ones seem to be in better shape. I think I will have to get some "shading stuff" to put on the top inside to reduce the heat as it gets really hot in there ... up to over 40°C !!! It is a gothic shape hoop type poly greenhouse and I therefore do not have vents at the top ... just either side . plus the open door.

            Cheers
            Nick
