  • what to follow tomatoes - and when?

First year with the greenhouse - so I have a line of tomatoes in a slightly raised bed down one side of the greenhouse. I really want to use the greenhouse over the winter - e.g. salads, chard, perhaps beetroot, perhaps dwarf french beans... So a couple (well, 3) questions please?

    a) what is "best" to follow on from tomatoes in an unheated large greenhouse?

    b) if I'm doing e.g. salads etc, when should I plan to remove the tomatoes so that I can plan to sow seeds ready to go in?

    c) is this a daft idea - should I just accept a long wind-down of the tomatoes and not plan to put anything in their place?

    thanks!

I follow with potted autumn/christmas flowering chrysanthemums that have stood outdoors for summer! Anything thaat will grow outdoors over winter will mature that little bit earlier (and usually cleaner) if planted indoors!

French beans won't grow over winter, but you can start them off a bit earlier in the spring.

You can't grow anything tender in a cold greenhouse, it is more useful for extending the season at either end, ie starting earlier in spring, and bringing things in pots undercover in autumn.

I will have my overwintering cuttings of fuchsias, pelargoniums etc in mine, but if it's another hard winter I will lose them. Fingers crossed x
