  • It's arrived

Well, after 25 years of greenhouse gardening in the UK, 5 years of being without a greenhouse here in France - prohibitively expensive, even getting one delivered from the UK is plus cher - I've finally got a greenhouse!

Arrived this morning, lovely kit form (I LOVE building greenhouses, sad I know), have a chum lined up to lay the concrete base for me and then get the thing built.

No need to use it to grow anything in - weather here is tomato, cucumber, aubergine and vine central - but winters here are very cold and it means I can really get ahead in the late winter/spring, growing my own for everything, rather than just the heirloom stuff. And have a heater on order already.

And the garden group that I help organise will get the benefits of home grown, bio seedlings rather than the commercially bought stuff.

    Happy days!

I keep toying with the idea

What make/style did you finally choose? ( I've no doubt you did a lot of research!)

Well done! I'd be lost without mine. I hope you got a big enough one?

Nicos - special offer from Willemse, aluminium and polycarbonate but I'm already working out how to replace some of the panels with 4mm glass so I can get extra vents, auto-openers and louvres fitted.

It's a 315 x 193, in old money (it's made in Israel, shipped to Holland, instructions in Dutch and French) and the packaging is printed in English so it's 6' x 10' in old money.

Decided against the concrete base, J says it's too cold and inhospitalble so sticking with large paving stones up the middle and I'll make duckboards from decking planks for each side so I can bolt the work benches down on to it but they still remain removable. J says I need an easy way of sweeping it out!!!!!!!!!!

So, going out this afternoon to build the base (it's raised on a metal base) so I can actually 'visualise' the size of it,. better than my painted spots on the ground.

I'm actually very excited, especially after our grand-daughter, aged 20, visited last week, not been here for 4 years and was just bowled over by us picking our own fruit and veg, even came out with me to pick some stuff and loves the idea of this place one day being hers!!!

Brilliant news Tony - I'm ever so slightly envious, both of your location and the greenhouse factor.

I seem to remember rightly or wrongly that you had some issues with wind a year or so ago (then again, I could be thinking of someone different entirely...). I presume it's not being sighted in the same place.

If it wasn't you that suffered the fate of the wind, then this post makes no sense from a certain point onwards, so please obligingly ignore it from said point...

              Congrats.

Congrats on getting your greenhouse, you've ever right to be excited.

I've had mine a year now and I've still got a daft grin on my face every time i look at it

Not sure it was me, don't think so, only problem with wind here is the small branches that come off the trees but we cut a lot of them down! Duly ignored apart from the congrats.

I've missed my greenhouses sooooooooooo much, sad old man that I've become

Same size as mine - and I also have it on soil with flag up the middle. I wish it was twice as big though!
