  • My new GH is half complete

I will soon be joining the Greenhouse Owners Club as I half erected my greenhouse at the weekend (with the help from my father in law). After levelling the ground and moving my shed 6 feet to the right, it took about 2 hours to put together the base, frame and attach the vent (and auto vent arm).

The frame went together quite well, initially my F in L and I were using the instructions more as a guideline and then the current Mrs P stepped in and took on the role of foreperson and it went together without any problems.

I had read reviews on this type of greenhouse (Gardman 6 x 8) prior to building and was aware that the bolts sheared quite easily and the fact the instructions were at times a bit vague. But overall the frame is very sturdy and although a few bolts were sheared, we manged to complete the job with the last nut and bolt!

Next step is putting the glazing (poly carbonate) in and then the final photo.

I have staging to build and can't wait to get growing. I've got some hopeful spuds growing for C****mas and some winter greens etc.

One bit of advice I would like to hear from other Grapes is should I heat it? There is no power yet, so it would have to be a parafin heather.

Paraffin heaters cause a lot of condensation and also require considerable attention. Why not just us it as a cold greenhouse to start with and add more insulation to prolong the growing season. When you have grown in it for a season or two then make the decision about heating. It can be an expensive business.
