  • How have you put up yours ?

A question for those with GH's on lotties. I want to have soil borders in my GH and need to know if I can just put up the GH on the soil or whether it needs to be on a concrete base. OH says that unless it's concreted in it could twist and the glass break. Advice needed please.

I concreted mine in via the metal base - suck plant pots where the pegs were, put base in, filled with postcrete.

I then dug a channel around where the base lengths and widths sat on the soil and filled it with pea gravel to allow drainage, and hopefully prolong the life of the base.

Call me Mrs Impatient, but I wanted it up yesterday and OH says the weathers now too cold for concrete too set I wanted to prepare the soil ready for spring and hope to plant a vine ,so the roots will probably need space to spread ......

There's an interesting little thread here around a similar topic.

Mine is set on railway sleepers trenched & set level with the soil surface.

The weight of those railway sleepers means it aint going anywhere!

Not clever......I'm just a skinflint and got the sleepers for nowt (Don't ask........................ and NO the Newcastle to Kings Cross will not be delayed for want of sleepers)!

I still reckon your best bet is to dig a trench the size of your greenhouse perimeter and flood it with concrete. Because its below ground, and as long as the ground aint like permafrost, it will go off. Chuck some old carpet over it if you're worried.

(If you was really clever you would cast some fixing bolts into it as well!)

That's what OH wanted to do but if I grow a vine won't it constrict the roots ? I've got some old doors laid over the area at the moment .
Oh now he's saying he's thinking about holes at the corners and then halfway at the midpoints and bolting into them ........

Vines are usually planted OUTSIDE the greenhouse then fed in through a hole!
