Moving a green house, HELP PLEASE!

I email the allotment committee the other day just to let them know I intend to put a greenhouse on my plot and was informed that I need to submit a simple plan of where I want to put on my plot for the committees approval before I do anything also the base cannot be permanent (meaning concrete etc) slabs set on the earth are best he said and I can buy slabs at the allotment very cheaply, so that's that sorted, on top of the slabs I'll put a row of breeze blocks and sit the green house on some timbers, should be fine at that.

So the greenhouse is now up on my lottie garden and I'm going post a little pic or two for ya's soon, thanks for all the tips they came in really handy

Thanks guys, its on a small plot at the mo but I gone the the swap list so as soon as a bigger/full plot comes up I'm going to move again but now I know what I'm doing it should only take a week end, moving the shed will be tricky unless I can get someone to give me a hand..

Update on the new plot:

Did fine with the onions and spuds but the brassicas under the trees bombed really going to see if we can get some of the tree/trees chopped in the autumn, Toms and peppers doing well to but I've not been able to cover the flowers so not done too good on the seed saving side of things..

I've been given another greenhouse (6x8) which we moved in one peace (without glass) to my other lottie garden ready for next season. Got some funny looks as we walked the half a mile to the lottie, someone in a van took a photo as they went past us lol

Moving a greenhouse - part one accomplished thanks to this thread

Checked out this website before embarking on moving our greenhouse. The advice was all sound; from having all the tools, newspaper, WD40 etc - see below everything is listed in this thread - especially the long screwdriver for releasing the glass from the rubber seal! Everything went quite smoothly (only one sheered nut), but it took 9 hours from the taking photos and drawing a diagram to packing away the tools at the end. A bit longer than the 5 hours in one of the threads! I think it must be about 8' x 6' (or even 10' x 8'?). Anyway we cracked on steadily, and took the advised tea and lunch breaks (included in the 9 hrs). Many of the panes were quite large too.

Also good advice was to make a diagram of the greenhouse and number the panes. I numbered the corresponding panes of glass with permanent marker. I realised it was a good idea to put the number in the same part of each pane eg bottom right corner and to mark it on the inside - that way we'll know which way up the panes go when we put them back in.

Which means - yes! We still have to move the frame and reassemble the glass. However, having followed all the advice in this thread, everything is ready to go! By the way, just to say 'remember to stack the glass on it's end' don't lie the panes down on top of each other.

You can remove the door with the glass in situ. Remove the glass carefully from the top down and stack it out of the way. Bear in mind that any debris on the glass can cause damage when panes are stacked together. The glazing clips can give you really sore fingers so a narrow nosed pliers can be really useful. A plastic bucket for the clips is also useful. Roof lights should slide off with glass intact although you may have to remove a couple of screws from fittings designed to stop them moving. As the others have said, If you can move the whole frame intact,do so.Two people will easily lift it as it is not heavy. If you have to dismantle it, Try to keep the gables (the ends) intact. The roof will be best dismantled but the sides should be able to be moved intact except of course the corner sections will have been disconnected when the ends were removed. Old aluminium bolts will sheer very easily so have some spares handy together with some spare glazing clips. They are easily lost. When re-assembling, it is well worth the effort to clean the frame with a power washer if you have one and do clean the glass before you put it all together.


I've dismantled and re-erected more greenhouses than I care to think about. Any customer asking it to be done is told they will be better off buying a new one. It isn't a five minute job and paying someone to do it hurts the wallet.

Update
So it's been a little while since I've posted on the vine. Two reasons really. The first is my laptops acting up and I've not had chance to get it looked at because of the second reason. I'm in the middle of swapping plots Thought I'd put a little update in this old thread of mine as i'm moving the greenhouse again!! The moves gone really well, the base went down over the weekend and I built the block walls for the greenhouse to sit on yesterday. If I can find someone on the allotment to give me a lift I'll see if the greenhouse fits!! I'll post some pic's shortly.

and watch ya head as well because i was repairing a roof pane yesterday and it fell on my head and shattered. luckily it didn't cut me to ribbons but there ya go lol the dangers of allotment running he he he
