    Hi Fellow Growers!

Its my first full year with the greenhouse (didnt manage to get it built until mid april last year) so I'm keen to get started and extend my growing season to the max.

Would be grateful for any suggestions on the types of vegies I can start off this time of year to get an early crop. Oh I have a heated window sill propagator and several unheated propagators too if needs be.

    Thanks in advance!

There are three threads on here just been started for early stuff.....tomatoes. chillies, and onions ....they all need to be started indoors unless of course your green house is heated

I spotted those, but was hoping for some inspiration beyond the obvious, so that I can make the most of my new GH.

        Salad?

I started cucumbers off in Feb last year, indoors - is your GH heated? It was really early, but I still got a few cucumbers from them.. main problem is the limited light, My toms and chillies did very well mind. I've yet to start them off -hopefully tomorrow if all is well.

I wouldn't call sowing chillies in Jan the obvious Most people do them in Feb/March

You should keep an eye on the What I Did Today thread

But I get the impression that you are very impatient and just want to start ... so start. Rules are there to be broken, or at least bent. Let us know about your successes.

Maybe broad beans are also obvious, but I've found they germinate in the cold greenhouse this time of year, with just a bit of fleece over them to give a bit of protection. They can be grown on a bit, hardened off and planted out to give them a bit of a head start if you haven't got autumn ones going already. I am further south than you, so perhaps someone in your area would be able to be a bit more definite about whether they would work for you.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

              - I think you have the wrong impression, not so much very impatient as well motivated

              - Good plan, I did have some in my raised beds under some mini tunnels, but after the onslaught of the recent snow they were looking decidedly sheepish so I decided to compost them. Might start some new ones off as you say, wont it be too late for broad beans? I thought they had to go in around October?

I've just sown some summer cabbages and cauliflowers to be planted on into the polytunnel for an early season harvest. Will grow them to crop small to get them out the way for other crops asap though.

Will also be putting some peas and mange tout in for early crops (only a few though), had crops about a month earlier last year which was fab.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

November for autumn sowings, Feb/March for spring sowings. They will all crop May/June, with autumn sowings about a fortnight earlier
