  • Plastic greenhouse glazing

I have had my greenhouse since I was 18 (Now 57).
It was a ploy by my mother to stop me frequenting the pub.

It's glass and I have never had any problems with wind damage.(Touch Wood!)

However my neighbor has a plastic glazed one and he or his wife are frequently seen chasing down the road after wayward pieces of the Greenhouse. ( As in can we have our greenhouse back mister? )

    Anyone else experienced this ?

Sure know about this, Kimmy.. my pal is on his 4th 'KITE' greenhouse in as many years. The problem is that they carry no weight and it only take a slight rip on a windy day to launch it.
One of my greenhouses is a converted wooden shed with lots of wind gaps and plastic roof and windows.. but stands firm as it so heavy. The other greenhouse is an alliminium and glass one attached to a wooden frame concreted in to the gound.
We were codering a poly tunnel but our lottie faces the north wind so i talked him out of it.

I'd love a "proper" greenhouse - I had three blow aways blow away. Nowhere to put one though. It must be amusing watching your neighbours chasing after the panes!

Jimmy presuming the frame is ally advise the people concerned to refit their glazing panels using clear silicon, costs pennies and will cure the problem.

Had my poly glazed GH 2 years now with no probs what so ever. Yes they are vey light in fact two of us picked up the whole structure to move it into place, but 30mm coach bolts into concrete means its going no where. Touch wood.

I think he has a metal frame. The panels are those corrugated twin skin plastic.

Is the "clear silicon," the stuff that looks just like glass?

I guess the corrugated stuff would have much better insulation that silicon or glass.

My old man had a standard 8x6 alloy/glass green house and the wind manage to lift one end and shift it about 6 inchs.

Jimmy yes just the same as my GH. Pop into your local Screwfix trade counter get their own brand No Nosense general purpose silicone in clear. Its water proof and UV resistant cost about £1-62. for a 310ml tube. Two tubes should be more than enough.

                  Jimmy,

No mate silicon comes in many forms, this stuff is similar to what you would use to seal round a bath. It comes in a cartridge/tube which fits in a 'gun' £2-54+vat this is then used to run a thin bead of silicon down the glazed panel/frame joint smooth in with a wet finger tip and bobs your auntie. It then semi sets/cures much like a glue but remains flexible.

                  Colin.

Ah so it's not a glazing replacement, it's to stick the crappy panes in so they don't blow out !

A guy on our allotment did the mastic trick with his plastic palace 2 years ago. It has stood up 4' of snow and several howling gales. Granted, it is bolted into 3'x2' flag stones, but it's still there!
