  • Got a Greenhouse - next step ?

OK .. just bought a 2nd hand EDEN glass glazed greenhouse.
    8' x 12' ... 2 roof windows, 1 x louvre window ,

I can site in in an area that gets sunlight all day ...

My aim is to grow tomatoes, chills, peppers, cucumbers ... and salad stock when garden is too cold, and probably start of veg plants for the garden.
No intent to grow flowers in it.

Soil is not suitable for growing, but I could dig out enough to put in top soil if needed - I have put in 50sq m of veg plots in raised beds because of this.

What is the best way to set this up ..

#1 centre flagged area, with earth beds on both sides and end

    # 2 centre flagged area with gravel bed down the side & container / pot grow.

It comes with some staging ... are these used above flagged areas ... which I assume does not gain you nay more growing area .. juts raises it off the floor.

It will depend on the person who answers your question I think everyone will have their own idea. Personally I have my green house on concrete and grow in pots but there again I grow everything in pots of one kind or another.

Me too my greenhouse is on wooden decking.. And I grew all my toms, peppers and aubergines in pots.. Along with starting everything in pots in there.

(I've only been growing a year though, but it works for me)

Can you get trays that are made to fit 'grow bags' ?

Other option was these ... anybody use these ?

Have to say these look brilliant to me lol. I love raised beds and stuff though. I am extremely tempted but just worried about the amount of compost/soil to fill them. So thanks - oh not so bad only 130ltrs I calculate.

Your other q - yes you can get trays to hold grow bags. Saw them in homebase the other week, believe they are readily available many places.

I have a path down the middle of mine with gravel on top of weed supressant membrane and grow in pots. This way I dont have to change the soil regularly but I do have to change the compost in the pots but this is easier than digging out the soil.

My end result was a concrete slab, then 'brick lay' on top of that a plinth, using 910 x 150 x 50 pre-cast concrete edging kerbs, these are used at rear of pavements usually against boundary wall .... square on all edges, and being 910 long were easier to get perfectly in line, plumb and level.

Bonus that it gained me 150mm height.

                              Bloody hell, that's a nice job, especially considering it's a second-hand greenhouse.

Quick, get some tomatoes in it!
