plastic disaster!

Im so sad i came home today after a 24 hour shift at work to find my lovely new plastic 6 x 4 greenhouse broken in three places, plastic cover ripped in several places an all my seedlings and beautiful plants and flowers, on the floor, ruined the wind must have been so strong last night
totally gutted.

poor you! That happened to me last year. Did you have it weighted down?

Oh! bad luck - I'm so sorry for you! I'm lucky enough to have a glass greenhouse (from the days before the kids arrived). Maybe you can salvage some of the seedlings?

I think i have managed to save a few things, peas and broad beans look ok, some of the brassicas look not too bad, but much is lost luckily my polytunnel and mini green house survived the weather!

I've got a "Norfolk" greenhouse with rigid plastic panes, and that has decided to move itself again in the wind. Number one son came round today and promised to bolt it down, but don't know when. I've also had a few of the mini-greenhouses which are covered with zip up flexible plastic covers and they just take off as soon as you get a high wind. Moving was solved by putting bricks on the bottom shelves, but the covers just seem to rip. Glass can be just as much of a problem if the greenhouse is not securely fixed to it's base. Hope you can salvage some of your seedlings and plants Wendy

Oh No Wendy, Our plastic greenhouse also broke a few months ago. Hubby rebuild the frame in wood and we just placed the cover back over the woodern frame. It is now screwed onto the fence after all my spuds got blown over and all mixed up

If you have a hacksaw you can shorten the frame and this makes a better fit.
I use wooden canes to brace poles, offer a climbing structure for melons, prevent water from collecting and supporting the plastic. I also use slabs to hold the plastic down where it meets the ground.

It doesnt seem to be my week at all...........yesterday when trying to save my broad beans and peas from a hail storm i slipped and damaged a tendon in my shoulder - no gardening for me for a few days!..........still gladly i rescued most of my plants from the green house disaster

Big sympathy Wendy, maybe something is tellling you to ease up a bit? Hope you feel better soon.

Arnica tablets are good for strains; French chemist gave me some when I had a fall on holiday. Get some from the Health food shop - if you can drive!

Keep breathing, I'm sure there is some reason for such things happening.

Sorry to hear that Wendy - I had the same problem last yer - just invested £40 on a large plastic greenhouse, was very pleased with myself for putting it up myself without any help - within the week the damn thing had blown half across my back garden - ripped to shreds! The two smaller plastic greenhouses with the little shelves in were OK though - but because they were smaller I put them in a more sheltered spot. Hope you managed to resuce some seedlings OK.
