  • Going away...what to do with the g/house!!?

I may be going away for a few days soon...4-5 days, there is absolutely no-one I can call upon to water my veg.... what can I do!!?

I'm pretty sure the outdoor stuff will be fine, no probs there.

It's the greenhouse... should I water alot before i go, then leave the window fully open, and'or the door... or just water alot keep it sealed and humid...I'm all unawares...help!!!

When you say soon......in the next week or so?

You should be ok this time of year for 4-5 days; I've not watered in my greenhouse much since last weekend; if you give them all a darned good drenching just before you leave, and leave the door/window open a touch to let any hot air out, I can't see it being too much of a problem.

Can you shade the gh at all? On the days I've forgotten to pull the blinds the small pots of seedlings have all really dried out in a day (it's been v.sunny with temps up to 40c)

Stand whatever pots you can on trays with water in them. The ones you cant, see if you can get some capillary matting and stand the rest on this while putting the end of it into a bucket of water.

Yep, i'd go with the capillary matting too. Used it in the past and it did the job. If possible try to invest in an automatic vent opener thingee that will open and close your roof vent when the temp. changes.
A good beginning is half the work.

If you can't get capilliary matting then old carpet in the trays will do the same job.

I had same dilema last year and I was going away for 2 weeks in July,my son kindly bought me an irrigation system with a timer for the green house which we set up and kept our fingers crossed, when I returned from my holiday I was thrilled to see everything was still perfect and growning well, its a little costly but well worth the peace of mind if you go away for several weeks. Enjoy your time away.

... or old bath towels (which I think ChrisMarks mentioned early on?)

I have a tarp that i can peg over the sun facing side, maybe block out alot of the direct sun, leave the door and window open and soak everything, we're looking at highs of 22-23 atm so I'm a little concerned.
