  • Toms in to growbags, how deep to plant?

(Gardeners Delight and Nectar F1 Variety) Can I bury the first set of true leaf trusses when i transplant them in to the growbags? Or is it just the seed leaves that can be buried? I only ask as the leaves on the first set of trusses have gone yellow and wilted somewhat but everything above is fine. As for the cause, i'm not too sure although i've only increased the watering since noticing them as i thought it may have been lack of water whilst in the high heat of the greenhouse but have since learnt its a symptom from over watering so i can rule that out.

Ordinary grow bags are too shallow for tomatoes: you could plant them in pots sunk into the grow bag, or you could cut the gb in half and stand each half on its end to make a deeper bag

... and you can bury toms up to their armpits in compost, they will grow extra roots from the stem

You can also stand growbags on their side to get them a bit deeper.

Or take the material out of the grow-bags, and put the plants as deep as they can go into big pots and sit on a tray so that you can keep them fully watered.

I have 4 growbags that i was planning to double up with, cutting out most of the bottom bag, and just slits from the top bag and then use the pots cut out on top of that bag for each plant. I was already aware one bag wouldn't be enough for toms thanks to you guys earlier this year when i read other threads on toms Just wasn't sure if i could bury further than the seed leaves. Going to plant them in now as i've reached the average last frost date for my area. I have plenty of fleece on standby though.

Focus are doing something called Grow Cubes this year - 3 for price of 2, £1.49 each. These look quite good and thought I might try these with bottomless pot on top for extra depth.

I plant three to a growbag and have done every year. Mine crop heavily in the greenhouse. But I do use the ring culture pots on top of the growbag, planting the whole plant into the pot. The roots then seek down into the growbag.

my first tomato has come through yay. been feeding them a weekly pour and feed general plant fert to encourage plant growth. its about 4ft tall so should I carry on with the plant food or should I now switch to tomato feed? ideally I would like them a bit taller as they are cordon toms.

When they start to flower you can feed them tomoato feed (as per the instructions on mine).. trying to use it up mind, as I've now got a load of comfrey growing that I'm going to use instead.

Mine are quite short as I buried them quite deep, just showing flower buds if I look closely - wanted them to be a bit taller in all honesty!

Switch to tomato food soon as the first truss as set, its high potash content will give you better fruit. The plant will still continue to grow upwards so no worries there.

Can / should you use comfrey feed before the first truss is set? I've got a bit brewing from some comfrey I found at work.

I grow my toms in the greenhouse border now, but when I used to use growbags I did what Zazz does (except I don't sit in a tray!)
