  • Greenhouse no-no's?

Hi all I've recently finished glazing a greenhouse I got given and I've been starting to populate it with plants.

The garden's a bit of a state because we haven't been long moved in and I've been concentrating on getting the greenhouse up and running so the GH is going to account for almost all my growing space this year apart from a few pots about the place and a wheelbarrow of potatoes.

I'd like to get a fair bit of variety on the go so my question is: Are there any fruit or veg that certainly should not be grown in the GH or is everything fair game?

Don't put brassicas (cabbage/broccoli/brussels etc) in there, as they prefer to be cooler. Probably too hot for lettuce/salad type crops too. (Although they'll grow well in there in the cooler months)

Don't plant courgettes into the border! They will turn into tryphids and take over the whole place
Also, runner beans don't do well in my experience, although french beans are ok.

That's interesting because someone gave me some young courgette plants and I put them in there and they have indeed grown pretty rapid!

I can give you a hint about them... don't leave the lourves, and doors open when it goes down to 4C overnight

Well, you can if you want sad looking tomatoes in the morning

I had the opposite problem when we had a screaming hot day at the beginning of may and I forgot to open the vent and hadn't put shading on yet, everything looked very sorry for itself!

That's why I bought some auto vent openers! I know I'd forget and fry everything!

my top tip: leave room for a chair, a book and a drink so you can be all warm & snug while it's blowing a hoolie outside
