not sure how its happened as I've been away for two days but come home to find the plant on the floor connect by a thread of stem. it got to 5ft tall so I'm guessing the top became to heavy and keeled over. can the remaining stem be replanted with new roots coming off it? or is it a gonner?

Sounds a gooner indeed . 5' does seem very tall, especially for this time of year, maybe the stem wasn't sturdy enough?

Wow 5ft thats one big pepper, I tend to pinch out the leading shoot at about 2ft 6" to make the plant bush and I still support with a cane.
I don't think you will be able to save this one but someone else may know for sure.

I would repot the stem and see how it goes. I broke one of my chilli plants earlier in the year and potted on the miserable looking stem and its doing fine.
