  • everyone else`s greenhouse is so full of things, mine is still mainly empty, just a few mini citrus plants on one side and seed trays on the other, most of my seeds are outside as they were put in trays out there while the dome was being finished, its only just almost finished, no door or tables even in it yet, all the tomatoes and cucumbers and lots of squash already planted out

    looks very empty

    • My greenhouse is emptier than it's been for months.

Here's the sunnier side with my 5 tomato plants. I've put 3 cucumbers down the end in the shade where they did well last year:

The chillis, melons and pumpkins are ready to be weaned off the propagators now. I've got some brassicas ready to harden off and have started off wallflowers and sweet william seeds and some other flowering stuff.

      • Please be kind - I've never had a greenhouse before and I have probably put in too many plants and too close together...

I have 9 tomatoes along the left side, with 3 Lipstick peppers, and 4 tiny aubergines at the top end. I can't put put the rest of the plants on the plot till it gets warmer though so the plants are stuck in ever-increasing pots...and taking up the west side of the greenhouse.

          • Keep your eye on your Toms Sparrow, they look a little close to each other so some serious arm-pitting may be in order.:

            • They are a foot apart and I'm using strings to hold them up (bright pink, so I can see it!). You're right BM - arm-pitting will be done regularly. Some of the remainder will have to go outside - and they need potting on but now there is nowhere to put them!

What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter?
                Pumpkin pi.

As BM has said, when they are too close it's not only harvesting and de-shooting that becomes a nightmare. With no airflow you may well get botrytis. I leave 18inches between each Tom plants - which is the minimum I think you can get away with. I do plant a staggered double row (which makes my life difficult!) but my beds are 3ft deep.

                  • I'll just have to see what I can do to keep the air flowing and the house not too damp.

                    • Sink plastic bottles into the ground, cover the earth up with newspaper, weed suppressant - I often use plastic chicken feed bags. Water into the bottles only. Keeps the GH dry.

                                Oops, missed this Urban
                                Yes, 2 plants to a growbag, 4 bags to a 10' shelf.
I did it last year and it worked well, but I've dropped the shelf this year to give the toms more head room. They're were a bit squashed against the glass!
