  • Budgies..........a novel idea?

Today I'll be fitting my new woodburner that I've just completed. I've also got a large budgie cage to take to the allotment as I'm sick of falling over it. at home.

I fancy hanging it up in the grreenhouse and getting a couple of budgies.

My next door neighbour at the allotment keeps about 20 budgies in an avery in his allotment shed quite successfully, so it might work for me.

I'll ask the neighbour (and may even cadge a couple of budgies when I see him) but considering I'm there every day to sort the chooks, the only problem I can envisage is extreme cold?

The woodburner is only on when I'm actually there.

    Wadya think?

What are they for? Smoke detectors? Wouldn't it be too hot for them when the sun is on the Greenhouse.
My neighbours have parrots in their conservatory but had to install air conditioning to keep the temperature down for them.

I'd be asking the guy with the budgies. he'll know what they can stand , hot and cold.

If they were housed in a shed as their mane cover, with access to an outside flight area, then i dont see a problem. They are a hardy bird, but need cover from the worst of even our weather in winter.
I hope you can succeed with it, as you have said your there every day, so good luck.

Apparently they will not only survive but will probably breed in a cage in the greenhouse throughout winter! Might be canaries though (just to be different)

Well, what do you usually have budgies for? Certainly not to eat as it would take half a dozen to make a decent budgie sandwich!
Even less probable for eggs as it would take about 100 eggs to make an omelette.

No, I reckon they will be there just as a pet!

If its good enough for the bird man of alcatraz............its good enough for me!

My dad used to breed budgies when I was a kid and they were housed in a shed with an outside flight.

Obviously, make sure they have some shade in case the sun comes burning through the glass ~ they could overheat very quickly (like dogs in cars).

I would also think they might be able to wriggle out of self opening vents... and getting caught in one closing doesn't bear thinking about

My dad bred budgies and they were in the shed ( concrete walls ) one day someone let them out and we lost them all bar one which was caught and brought indoors to the nice warm kitchen. That one lasted years.

No, I think Snadger would have them in a cage within the greenhouse, not flying loose
