  • UV 5 Season polythene

I want to construct a large cloche using that blue tubing and plastic pipes stuck into ground. It was successful last year and it's good because I can move it around the plot easily. I wondered if anybody had ever invested in the UV polythene supplied by polytunnel manufacturers. Is it as good as they claim and will it stand being manipulated every so often? Last year I used the wrapper from a new mattress but obviously it wasn't made for the job.

If it were me, I'd go to these guys and get this; I've got stuff from them before and they are very reasonably priced and you can drive through to get your goodies. Call them up for the best price.

Just beware, they say their polythene is only good for 4 seasons. My polytunnel cover has been on for 8 years. It will need recovering in the next couple of years though

          Hi there,

When it comes to polythene films/polytunnel covers, the preferred cover of UK growers is the Thermal Anti Drip polythene film. (Sometimes called Anti Fog).

The air inside a polytunnel/cloche has a high moisture content, causing water to evaporate and form droplets (or fogging) on the inside of the cover. Anti Drip additives within the film prevent large droplets forming and dropping back onto the plants, causing damage and disease to them.

The Thermal effect of the film prevents heat radiation being lost from the polytunnel, therefore maintaining a higher foliage temperature and drier plants, and leading to lower heating costs.

Some films, such as our Thermal Anti Drip, also use mineral additives to diffuse the light entering the polytunnel, ensuring that some light will make its way into the central and more shaded areas of the plants.

Our New-to-the-UK Thermal Anti Drip polythene is available in two gauges - 600 gauge/150 micron with a 4-year warranty against UV degradation and an expected lifespan of 7-8 years, and 720 gauge/180 micron with an extended 5-year warrant against UV degradation and an expected lifespan of 8-10 years.

There are, of course, other films available - such as standard polythene and specific Cloche Film, which is a thinner gauge.

If often helps to see and feel the quality of the material for yourself, therefore if you would like a sample of each of our Thermal Anti Drip films and our Cloche Film, please do not hesitate to call the Sales Team (not sure I can give telephone numbers via the forum) or drop us an e-mail with your name and address.

Good luck with building your cloche.
