  • winter holiday and watering worries.

    Hi,

I am brand new to this website and forum and I am hoping that someone here will be able to HELP ME??

I will be going away soon for my winter holiday and have concerns about watering my plants in the greenhouse/lean-to, could anyone recommend a reliable automatic watering system that will not break the bank??
I have purchased some 'Mr Plantswells' for my planters and troughs earlier this year which I have been really pleased with now I just need to sort out my Greenhouse!

    Many thanks

Hi Willowwood and welcome to the vine. What do you have growing and how long are you away for. Most things don't need a lot of water during the winter, so depending what it is you may not have a huge problem at this time of year.

Welcome to the vine! I have the Hozelock AC10+ (or something like that, anyway). It kit was ~£30 from my local g/c on offer.. You could get away with some big drippers.. 10 days isn't too long mind. A good watering will probably sort it out (this time of year), and then placed on some capillary matting (with the end in a bucket of water).

Failing that, friends/neighbours to pop in on the 5th and if it needs watering, give it one?

I haven't watered some overwinter stuff that's been in my GH (not needing to be in there I might add) a week once yet, and they still don't need it.

Your garlic and shallots will be fine outdoors though?

I don't know that you'll need to water at all... I can't remember when I last did my gh and it's stuffed with plants.
It's cold now, they aren't growing, so they don't need watering.
