  • greenhouse losses in 2011/12, storms secure yours well

as most of us are aware we have had some pretty nasty storms recently bringing carnage to us all.on my way to work tuesday morning i noticed a road block ahead as i got nearer i noticed that there was a greenhouse on the road a palram type,it appeared to have its base still attached and i saw 4 red bricks where the screws for the base go through.it seems it wasnt secured well seeing it was screwed to 4 red bricks lol.moving on,after work i went to my local department store to buy propagators, the 8 foot gardman and oasis green houses they had on display were smashed to bits they wernt even screwed down :-/ my 12 foot greenhouse given to me was just sat on bare earth before i collected it from its old home given the strength of these storms im sure it would of been toast by now,ive had to peg the frame down as it was sliding across the lawn(still waiting to be sited).ive learnt from these common mistakes before so any new comers to gardening like myself if u wish to install a greenhouse please think about strong security to prevent your pride and joy flying away,if you have a greenhouse and you think it will be ok with 4 screws holding it down get out there and add another 12 as it seems our weather is becoming more of an issue as the years progress.protect your investment as greenhouses are being scratched of some home insurance policies.thoughts and prayers go out to the 2 people killed in these storms and their families.blessed be and many years and yields of tasty crops to you all.

Mine is bolted into a 12-18" high solid concrete base. They had better stay firm at £1500!

My blowaway is in tatters at the bottom of the garden. It has stayed put (with 2 huge bags of compost holding it down) but one of the connectors has snapped so i am going to need a new one. This is its third year though, so i suppose i cant complain too much for a cheapy.

I have a half-glassed greenhouse inherited on the plot and I am amazed that it is still there and not a pane cracked. Am starting to rethink reglazing in polycarbonate though!!!

I went up to my plot this morning and found one of those b and q perspex green houses on a load of onions and leeks.
Still don't know who it belongs to?

My bottom greenhouse in which i'm housing some chooks for the winter felt a bit drafty when i went in to feed them. One pane had been blown out and another in the roof had cracked and broke. I found some perspex and just siliconed it into position to stop the chooks escaping.

My chook runs at the top of the garden were partly covered with perspex to keep a bit of rain off them. The two perspex sheets were retrieved from next doors allotment but will have to wait until the weekend to be fixed in position.

Fingers crossed my polytunnel will survive this week! Working in it today was terrifying as it felt as if the whole thing would take off at any moment. Glad I took the time to plant iron securing posts for every upright.

I'd be absolutely gutted if my greenhouse ended up on my onions (or anywhere else). Hope the owner gets it sorted without too much hassle.

Well, I can see my greenhouse is where I left it in the back garden. Hopefully, complete with glass.

I have no idea about the constructions (can I say erections without being bleeped out?) on my old and new plot. Both are made of wood and glass/perspex/polythene and have come with the plots. I have no idea what I would do if anything major happened to them.

The fence on the plot I am leaving was blown down in the last winds though.
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

Greenhouse still standing at home, but on the plot the toolsheds and ramshackle stores, not ours, are reduced to kindling pretty much. Everything looks battered.

My greenhouse is a lean-to, bolted to the garage gable end and concrete base in more than the recommended places. It’s not going anywhere. I still lost a 4mm toughen glass panel back at the beginning of December. But that’s nothing compared to want happened to the poly a week later.
