I have strong wire running across the top and then sink string into the ring-culture pots - winding toms up string as they go, it's work thus far.

The sideshoots are bigger than the parents! I do grow on the weeny sideshoots but always seem to miss some. At what age does a baby become too large to detach without risk to its mummy?

I would say they don't ever become too large as they will be taking energy from the main plant.

Apparently it only applies to indeterminate plants.....

Yep if you armpit bush type plants you are defeating the object.

I side shoot cordon toms no matter what the size of side shoot, but if I am looking to produce extra plants I always root the larger ones in water first. Other wise with no root to feed them and a lot of greenery to support they tend to whither.

Once the roots have formed pot on as normal you will be surprised at the growth rate.

String every time. Even for the outside ones:

Doesn't seem to matter how windy it gets - the worst I've suffered is a bit of slippage. The string is not tied to the plant; just wrapped around the stem and left loose at the bottom.

Thank you Gentlemen (and that means you BigMallly and Potty) for your reassurance that, no matter how big a side shoot, I should still whip 'em off!
