  • Paraffin Greenhouse Heaters

    Hi All

Ive been given a Paraffin Heater...do any of you grapes use one ? its on the go now with a lovely blue flame and is warming the new greenhouse a treat and am I right in saying it gives off Carbon Dioxide ? Would welcome any replies as always.

    Cheers braders...

Hi Braders, yes I use one but mine is designed to burn with a yellow flame. The sort you have works on a different principle and providing the flame is burning a nice clean blue then all you get is CO2. However if it gets dirty and the flame turns yellow/orange then it will produce CO (carbon monoxide). If this happens you will have to clean and air inlets/grills and trim the wick. There is usually a grill just below where the flame burns, take care when cleaning this as its main function is to stop the flame/heat backing down to the paraffin tank.

    Hope this helps Colin

I used to use one with a yellow flame but it produced a lot of condensation.

The process of combustion of any carbon fuel produces large amounts of water vapour (H2o). As a for instance 1 volume of natural gas (CH4) when burnt will produce 1 volume of carbon dioxide (Co2) and 2.1 volumes of (H2o).

Think of the steam you see coming from the flue of a modern gas boiler. Because the products of combustion are at a lower temperature we can see the water vapour more easily.
